The acclaimed picture book My name is not Refugee was written by Kate Milner.
The book follows a little boy and his mother on a journey from their home in an unnamed country at war, to a safe place far away.
The book deals with the uncertainty, the anxiety, the loss of the bond between parent and child.
On many pages there are questions directly to the reader that encourage sympathy and reflection – what would you do if this happened to you?
Music Posters
A collection of 33 music posters has been released in PDF format for second and third level students.
Additionally, in collaboration with teachers, 5 of these posters have been printed and are being distributed to schools.
Stay alert for their arrival, as they will be reaching you soon!
Plastic
This is a cross-curricular resource that helps pupils learn about the impact of plastic on the environment, animals and people around the world, why it has become such a big problem, and that businesses, governments, schools and the general public have a role to play in solving the issue.
Fir for Luck is a historical children’s novel about a feisty girl called Janet. She’s only twelve, but she finds herself in quite a scary position – she is the only one standing between her village and the officer with the eviction writ.
If she doesn’t do anything, her village will be cleared.
She, her friends and her family will be homeless and they’ll have to leave behind all they have ever known. Their whole way of life will be lost.
But what CAN she do?
She chooses to fight.
Stories with Catriona Lexy Campbell
Listen to three stories from the author, poet and actor, Catriona Lexy Campbell and take part in the following workshops to create your own stories in the same style. We would love to see your stories, why don’t you send them to oifis@storlann.co.uk
Two of the stories are from the Gaelic oral tradition and one is written by Catrìona herself and appears in her book, Sgeulachdan Eagalach, Feagalach.
It is an opportunity for pupils to hear traditional stories, develop their talking and listening skills as well as writing skills, and most importantly to let their imaginations run wild!
The Queen
Elizabeth II served as Queen for 70 years and 214 days. She was the longest-reigning British monarch, and the longest-reigning female head of state in recorded history.
History of my village
This resource aims to support schools in developing pupils’ listening and speaking, research skills and technology skills. Through research, the children will get to know some of the history and culture of the area in which they live.
This is a great opportunity for pupils to practice their Gaelic outside the classroom and get to know Gaelic speakers in their own area.
With support perhaps from a Historical Society or a Gaelic Development Officer, the interviews could be face to face, on the phone or over the internet. Each council will have different rules depending on the technology allowed and rules regarding safety on the internet, eg, mobile phones, Zoom, Skype etc
